WEEK 3 — Straight Lines & Basic Graphs

Welcome to Week 3 of your eight-week maths catch-up plan.
This week is all about understanding straight lines, graphs, and the very important equation y = ax + b.
Each day has a clear focus, simple explanations, and practice questions to help ideas become natural and visual.

The video at the top of the page gives you the full lesson.
Below you’ll find the mind map, the daily breakdown, practice exercises, and a short quiz.

Mind Map – Week 3

DAY 1 — What Is a Graph?

Today introduces the basics of graphs.

What to understand

A graph is a picture of how two numbers are connected.

Key points:
• x-axis = horizontal
• y-axis = vertical
• A point looks like (x, y)

Practice

Plot these points on a simple grid (you can draw one):

  1. (0, 2)

  2. (1, 3)

  3. (–1, 0)

  4. (2, 4)

DAY 2 — Understanding Slope (a)

Slope tells you how steep a line is.

What to understand

• If a > 0 → line goes up
• If a < 0 → line goes down
• If a = 0 → flat line

Practice

Say if each line goes up, down, or is flat:

  1. y = 2x

  2. y = –x

  3. y = 0x + 3

  4. y = –3x + 1

  5. y = 5x – 4

DAY 3 — Intercept (b)

Today focuses on where the line crosses the y-axis.

What to understand

b = the value of y when x = 0.

Examples:
• y = x + 2 → intercept = 2
• y = –2x + 5 → intercept = 5

Practice

Find the intercept:

  1. y = 3x + 1

  2. y = –x + 4

  3. y = 2x – 3

  4. y = –4x + 7

  5. y = x

DAY 4 — Plotting a Straight Line

Today you learn how to draw a straight line from its equation.

What to understand

  1. Choose x values

  2. Work out y

  3. Plot the points

  4. Join them

Practice

Plot these lines (choose x = –1, 0, 1, 2):

  1. y = x + 2

  2. y = 2x – 1

  3. y = –x + 3

DAY 5 — Mixed Practice (Revision)

Putting everything together.

Practice

  1. Does y = –3x + 1 rise or fall?

  2. What is the intercept of y = 5x – 2?

  3. Plot y = x – 1

  4. Plot y = –2x + 4

  5. Identify slope and intercept of y = 4x + 3
